The Canadian Friends of John Muir

The Canadian Friends of John Muir sponsor interpretive walks in Muir's Meaford. Contact them for details.

They publish materials related to Muir's time in Meaford, including maps and Muir's letters to his friends in Canada.

They promote conservation and support like minded organizations around the world.

In 1998, The Canadian Friends discovered the site of theTrout Hollow mill in the Bighead River Valley where Muir spent time botanizing and working with his friends making rake handles. In 1999 an archeologist was hired by the land owner, Stanley Knight Ltd. to begin excavations at 3 sites in the Hollow. The results are available now.

The Canadian Friends have been instrumental in linking the communities of the Bighead Valley (Meaford, Sydenham Twsp. & St. Vincent Twsp.) with our sister community Dunbar Scotland.

Both communities share a former fishing resource base, now gone. Both share a connection to John Muir's early life before he was blinded. Both have populations that are almost identical. Both share deep Scottish roots.
